Granite
General Characteristics: Granite is composed of feldspar and quartz (SiO2), with a small amount of mica and other minerals, such as zircon, apatite, magnetite, ilmenite, and sphene. Granite crystallizes from magma that cools slowly, deep below the earth's surface. Granite, along with other crystalline rocks, constitutes the foundation of the continental masses, and it is the most common intrusive rock exposed at the earth's surface. Granite has greater strength than sandstone, limestone, and marble and accordingly, more difficult to quarry.
Granite can be used for all in-house and outdoor purposes. It is the hardest of the stones. It is durable, heat, UV, acids and crunch resistant. Granite is slightly porous and it can absorb liquids to some extent. This can be prevented by the application of a stone sealer/impregnator professionally applied by your fabricator/installer. Quality impregnators, sealers, cleaners, and other stone care products are available from Marble Craft Design. |
